Fall means harvest season is getting underway across Nebraska. Along with combines moving through fields and trucks hauling grain, drivers may begin seeing more tractors, combines, grain carts, and other farm equipment traveling on local roads.
For both farmers and motorists, a little extra patience and preparation can make a big difference during this busy time of year.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as harvest traffic picks up around Beatrice and throughout southeast Nebraska.
Slow Down When You See Farm Equipment Ahead
Farm machinery travels much slower than regular traffic, which means the distance between your vehicle and a tractor or combine can close faster than you expect.
When you see farm equipment ahead, reduce your speed early rather than waiting until you’re close behind it. Leave plenty of following distance so you have time to react if the equipment slows, stops, or turns.
Don’t Assume It’s Safe to Pass
Getting stuck behind slow-moving equipment can be frustrating, especially when you’re in a hurry. But passing isn’t always as simple as it looks.
Farm equipment can be wide enough to extend into another lane or onto the shoulder. The operator may also need extra room to maneuver around mailboxes, signs, bridges, or other roadside obstacles.
Wait until you have a clear view of the road ahead and can legally and safely complete the pass.
Watch for Left Turns
A tractor or combine moving toward the right side of the road isn’t necessarily inviting you to pass.
Large farm equipment may need to move right before making a wide left turn into a field, driveway, or farm entrance. Pay attention to turn signals and other indications that the operator may be preparing to turn.
Give Farmers Room to Work
Harvest is a busy season, and farmers may be moving equipment between fields throughout the day.
Large machinery has different visibility, braking, and turning characteristics than a passenger vehicle. Avoid following too closely, driving alongside equipment longer than necessary, or attempting to squeeze through an area where there isn’t enough room.
A few extra minutes behind the wheel is a small price to pay for helping everyone get where they’re going safely.
Farmers: Check Equipment Before Heading Onto the Road
Harvest preparation isn’t only about what’s happening in the field.
Before taking machinery onto public roads, check lights, reflectors, tires, mirrors, warning devices, and other safety equipment. Make sure loads and attachments are properly secured and that operators understand the equipment they’ll be using.
Visibility becomes particularly important when equipment is traveling around dawn, dusk, or after dark.
Don’t Forget About Your Insurance
Harvest season can also be a good reminder to review your insurance.
Farm operations change. Equipment is purchased or replaced, values increase, additional vehicles are put into service, employees or family members take on different responsibilities, and the way equipment is used can evolve.
If something has changed since your last insurance review, your agent should know about it.
Farmers may want to review farm property, equipment, liability, and vehicle coverage, while other Nebraska drivers can use the start of fall as a reminder to look over their auto insurance.
Understanding your deductibles, limits, and coverage before an accident or loss occurs can help prevent surprises later.
